Mise en Scene Research & Planning

Location Research

Location is important as it sets the atmosphere for the music video and allows the audience to see the personality and tone of the song which can be conveyed through a vibrant setting as well as a dark, sinister outlook, a bitter sweet theme. In Panic! At The Disco's music video 'Mona Lisa' the video if filmed in one setting, a room which can be seen as a convention of the Alternative genre as they are attempting to create a simple yet effective style also a way to save the budget on costume as well as creative camera shots. In this music video, the small stage area, a victorian style reflects there image as artists. We would also like to create this simple yet effective style to out video, we would like to experiment different shades of lighting to highlight the positive, vibrant as well as artistic atmosphere such as in the music video Twin Peaks, in the beginning shots of close ups, mid shots of the singer. we may want to decorate the stage area to increase the vibrant effect. In American Rejects video However as the lyrics transition to a more darker theme, we would like to change the lighting to a more darker red lighting to reflects the change in the lyrics, such as the costume change in Panic!'s video emphasise this darker transition.

From watching and analysing several alternative music videos such as Gives you hell by American Rejects I have seen this recurring theme of the reappearance of the band performing on a stage area or a performance space for the band. As well as a second location for the story/concept to take place but also allowing a marketing aspect (performance) the audience can see this performance element to the music video which can be effective as it shows the audience the artist and the emotions associated the song. We would like to incorporate this convention within our music video giving our video character and an artistic element.

Our first initial ideas for our filming location, were in the music block where we could have easy access to different instruments making the process simple when filming the band playing. However this does not create a dark alternative look that we want to portray, it has a particular school atmosphere emphasized by the carpets and posters plastered around the several music rooms which does to generate the image we were going for. Our second thought was possibly filming in the drama studio, which has a stage which we can use for the main chorus performance of the band. This also allows us to experiment with different lighting that we were thinking of utilising, to create an artistic yet stylistic element within our video

SHED

This wooden, practice space like American rejects, panic at the disco saving their budget, connection with a similar audience shows a DIY casual setting, representing a cool yet retro theme, a recurring theme of the use of this performance space can be seen in American rejects with the use of lighting and retro setting with character shown through the posters and red colour scheme tying into this rebellious look yet vibrant. This shabby type location can be seen in various music videos of the alternative genre as it represents a casual yet a conventional band image as rehearsal space. Goodwin's theory shows that location is a large part of the music video as it creates either a vibrant engaging performance and sets the atmosphere of the music video it can also make the video more authentic make the artist look more authentic in terms of an artistic approach through the posters as well as this authentic, rehearsal space connecting to the target audience. Realistic location for a punk band. We also wanted to create a bar like atmosphere, such as the setting for the performance during the music video- All American Rejects.
